WASHINGTON D.C. — Former D.C. United Midfielder Luis Silva scored in the 64th minute of this replacement game to give Real Salt Lake a 1-0 victory over D.C. United. Sunday’s game was a replacement game from the previous day because of rain issues so this was a very dry Sunday night match.
The extra day was definitely worth it for Real Salt lake as they walked out of RFK stadium with a win. Sunday’s game picked up at the point where it stopped Saturday which was a United corner kick. So instead of starting the game off at midfield the game began with a Luciano Acosta corner kick that sailed over the heads of his teammates in the box D.C. United was doing a good job in the first half of both games. DeShorn Brown was forced to the sideline at the 36 minute mark after receiving a blow to the head. He was being evaluated for concussion symptoms. DC United did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game in the first half. Real Salt Lake was having a hard time advancing the ball into DC United’s territory. Acosta put on a show for the home crowd in the first half by showing off his fancy footwork. That sequence of brilliance in Real Salt Lake’s defensive box led to a shot on goal that sailed over the goal post. Kofi Opare’s shot attempt hit off the top of the goal post after receiving a beautiful cross pass in the 45th minute.
The second half started off as a seesaw battle between the two teams. The Black-and-Red once again had a decent opportunity, but missed wide in the 56th minute. This seemed to be the story of the game for D.C. United. They failed to capitalize on the numerous scoring opportunities that they were afforded. The tide of the game seemed to change as the game took on a very chippy edge to it. Real Salt Lake’s Chris Wingert was given a yellow card for being a bit extra physical, soon after D.C. United’s Paul Arriola was issued a yellow in the 63rd minute.
It seemed as if D.C. United lost focus at this point of the game. You cannot make mistakes in your own box and that is exactly what D.C. United did. Real Salt Lake’s Luis Silva scored on on a shot from inside of the box due to a poor clearance attempt by Marcelo Sarvas. The momentum and possession seemed to change after the 60 minute mark .
D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen made that clear in the post game press conference. “Sixty minutes? Yeah, 60 minutes, great, good. Sixty minutes of what we need to do to win games. Sixty minutes — what’s that worth? Nothing. Another loss is what 60 minutes of high-level stuff gets you.” As Sean Franklin alluded to, the team has had an issue giving up “crap goals” and that trend cost them another game.
